The Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) and Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) will offer a kayak and foot-pedaled swan boat program at the Penn’s Landing Marina from May 28, 2011 to September 11, 2011. The goal is to introduce Philadelphia residents and visitors to recreation on the Delaware River and educate them about the river as an important natural resource. The program is operated by Hidden River Outfitters, Philadelphia’s premier kayak outfitting company.

Job description:
Staff will coordinate the program on-site ensuring an enjoyable, educational and safe guest experience.


  • Manage ticketing system
  • Secure necessary waivers from guests
  • Ensure guests are wearing PFDs and using equipment properly
  • Provide basic kayak instruction, assistance entering and exiting kayaks and swan boats
  • Oversee guests in the water
  • Ensure guests comply with all rules and policies
  • Educate guests about local recreational and environmental topics through interpretation (training provided)

Fridays 4:00 -8:00pm
Saturday and Sunday 12:00-8:00 pm
July 8th, through August 12th, additional Friday hours of 9am – 1pm.

Necessary skills and qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years old. Preference will be given to applicants who have already undergone American Canoe Association or equivalent safety training, and are CPR and first aid certified; and/or those who have a background in environmental education and interpretation.

Selected employees who do not already have certification will undergo Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Boating and Water Safety Awareness training (coordinated through PEC). This training will occur in mid-May and is mandatory. Tentative dates are May 17th – 18th from 9am to 1pm.

 All employees will participate in a training session with PEC to learn basic environmental interpretation and be able to provide guests with educational information.

People skills and ability to lift equipment, are also necessary.

$10 an hour
