Vibrant and alive! Philadelphia has become one of America’s most exciting cities, witnessing unprecedented growth and development that brings new environmental challenges to the city and its decentralized suburbs. The Pennsylvania Environmental Council is the region’s recognized leader in advancing innovative solutions to this array of challenges.

Northeastern Pennsylvania is lush with forests, waterfalls, vistas and the majestic Susquehanna River. Here is where America found new wealth in anthracite coal and timber to fuel the Industrial Revolution. These industries left not only a rich history but also scarred landscapes and polluted streams. The Pennsylvania Environmental Council, through many partnerships, is tackling these issues and improving the economy through tourism and recreation in this scenic region.

The mightly Susquehanna and its three branches dominate the landscape and often the economy of Central and Northcentral Pennsylvania. It’s a huge landscape, full of opportunity and challenges, such as the excess nutrients and sediments that impair the Chesapeake Bay. The Pennsylvania Environmental Council has been engaged throughout the region in a wide range of innovative projects that are making a real difference.

Pittsburgh is defined by its riverfronts, while the surrounding countryside is defined by river-carved gorges and the Allegheny Mountains. This rebirth of the community flowed from the rebirth of the rivers, once little more than backalleys of industry, and the Pennsylvania Environmental Council has been a leader in this effort.
